Briefs: Beatles ‘08, Leopard update, new get-a-Mac ads

picture-2.jpgA few bits of Apple (AAPL) news worth noting:

Paul McCartney: “It’s all happening soon,” he told Billboard.com. “Most of us are all sort of ready. The whole thing is primed, ready to go — there’s just maybe one little sticking point left, and I think it’s being cleared up as we speak, so it shouldn’t be too long. It’s down to fine-tuning. I’m pretty sure it’ll be happening next year, 2008.” (link)

“Let me put that statement into American English,” says Fake Steve Jobs. “Paul wants more money.”

First Leopard Update: More than a dozen improvements in Mac OS X 10.5.1, issued three weeks after Leopard’s release, including fixes in Mail, Airport, Time Machine, Back to My Mac and some pesky Firewall issues. Not yet repaired: Among the repairs: that nasty core data bug.

iMac Anti-freeze: Apple also released a graphics firmware update that’s supposed to finally solve the freezing problem some aluminum iMac users have been suffering since September. I’ll believe it when my Dad tells me his iMac has gone more than a week without crashing.

Three New Mac Ads: The Get-a-Mac ads are back on TV (and available from Apple here) after a summer hiatus. “Same joke,” writes Michael Gartenberg. “Still as effective.” But maybe not quite as funny.

I see now that IE* has ’safe browsing’ - gee sounds familiar dont it.
After using windows for years, my little mac is so much more stable. It’s not perfect, but I dont have to wait for running virus programs anymore.

PED: As others have pointed out and the release notes clearly state, what you refer to as the “core data” bug has been fixed. It’s been several hours and still no correction on your part. The more generous of us would say you’re taking your time to verify this before correcting your article. The more cynical of us will say that you haven’t posted a correction because you’re more interested in spreading FUD.

Which is it?

ex ped: Noted and corrected. Sorry for the delay. I was busy with my day job. –Philip Elmer-DeWitt

Yet another one from the Supreme Master AAPL FUDsterâ„¢

If I ever have as much problem (his dad’s iMac) as he claims from any product, common sense dictates that the first thing anyone would do is to return it and have it replaced. But then he won’t have a story to tell :/

ex ped: He did return it. The replacement also froze. It’s in the story, if you’d bothered to read it. I don’t know why you find it so hard to believe that even Apple can make products that have problems. To their credit, Apple support spent hours on the phone with my father and eventually the company sent out a firmware update that seems to have cured his machine. –Philip Elmer-DeWitt

I’m glad that the “I’m a Mac” ads are back. I missed them. They look strong.

I especially like the Wheel of Fortune one.

That link doesn’t mention “Core Data”. Are you sure that’s related?

The core data bug referenced, which is about moving files between partitions, is listed as fixed in 10.5.1, see the first item under “system and finder”:

ex ped: Right you are. I was misinformed. Fixed now. Thanks. –Philip Elmer-DeWitt

In the release notes for the update - it clearly states that the “core data” bug is fixed in this release (I assume you are referring to the Finder copying to different Partitions data loss bug). Would help if you read the release notes before writing an article on it.

Please revise your text - I think its great it only took them 2 weeks to do this - usually its a month.

ex ped: Duly noted. Thanks. –Philip Elmer-DeWitt

“Elmer”-

Such a fitting hyphenated last name, as you perpetuate such “FUD” re: your father’s new iMac freezing issues- read that previous article and sure would like to know how he ever “survived” without your help when he was a Windoze user. God help him if he had ever needed tech support from Dell, experienced a BSOD, experienced any Virus infections that contaminated or wiped his hard drive (yes, even with virus protection programs running), or would have been forced to “upgrade” to Vista when buying a new Windoze box.

How much is Micro$oft paying you?

ex ped: My dad has never used a Windows machine. And I suspect Microsoft pays me precisely as much as Apple pays you. –Philip Elmer-DeWitt.

Sir Paul should get whatever dollar amount he wants for his music. Lennon and McCartney music will makes tons of money for Apple. Sir Paul Rules.

Philip Elmer-DeWittSilicon Valley veterans like to joke that Steve Jobs must be surrounded by a reality distortion field; if you get too close to him, you start to believe what he's saying. Thanks to the success of the iPod, the launch of the iPhone and the renewed interest in the Mac, Apple has made believers out of millions of customers - and made a lot of investors rich. But Philip Elmer-DeWitt believes that an ounce of skepticism never hurts when writing about the company. He should know. He's been covering Apple - and watching Steve Jobs operate - since 1982, first for Time Magazine, then for Business 2.0, and now for Fortune.
