Will Jonathan Ive replace Apple’s Steve Jobs?
One of the nicest things about Jonathan Ive, chief designer of the iPod, the iPhone and just about every other Apple (AAPL) product since the original candy-colored iMac, is that he has displayed absolutely no ambition to rise to the top of Apple Inc. He seems content to lead a design team that is without equal in the world of consumer electronics.
Which is what makes the two questions at the top of the long profile of Ive in today’s Times of London so bizarre:
Could Jonathan Ive, the publicity-shy Essex boy who started his career designing toilets and combs, be close to performing one of the most extraordinary coups in American business history?
Could this 40-year-old gym-toned, shaven-headed, Aston Martin-driving Brit, who lives in Twin Peaks, San Francisco, with his wife, who is a historian, and their twin sons, be the next man to run Apple Computer? (link)
Does Rupert Murdoch’s Times know something we don’t? Is Apple PR paving the way for Steve Jobs’ succession?
No, no, no and no. If you read the Times story closely you will see that it is what journalists call a write-around — a profile written without the cooperation of the main subject or his handlers.
“Jony feels his time would be better spent doing his job than doing interviews,” an Apple spokesperson tells the Times’ Chris Ayres in the last sentence of the piece.
With nothing new to say and no access to Ive, why run the story at all?
Why indeed. If there is a Murdochian agenda at play here, it seems to be to stir the embers of the nearly dormant Apple stock option backdating case, a train of logic that starts in paragraph 10 and leads to Ive by the most circuitous route:
No matter how remote the possibility of Mr Jobs standing down might be, some investors would be happier if Mr Ive was named officially as the Apple CEO’s successor to avoid future doubt.
Mark Molumphy, the lawyer who is filing the revised lawsuit against Apple, conceded to The Times that Mr Ive was more or less untouchable as far as the stock options litigation goes. “The evidence we’ve seen does not implicate him,” he said.
Strip all that away and what you have is a local-boy-does-good story served up for The Times‘ homegrown readership. The fact is, Ive shows no appetite for the spotlight that shines so brightly on Apple’s CEO, as even Ayres must concede:
There are sceptics, of course. Some have suggested that Mr Ive lacks the charisma to become “Steve 2.0”, and that he could never deliver Mr Jobs’s Hollywood-style press conferences, replayed endlessly on YouTube.
As it happens, Jonathan Ive does make a rare video appearance on YouTube, which 9to5Mac has kindly dusted off and which we have pasted below the fold.
Is this the next Steve Jobs? You be the judge.
Ivey has been sent an offer to work for Dell, an offer he couldn’t possiblly refuse!
CEO jobs are not very fun. Why be CEO when you can just get a ton of stock options and cash out?

I believe it’s called “speculation”. Look it up.
What on earth would he gain from the CEO job?
I’ll bet he thinks he has the best job in the world already, doing what he is undeniably world class at doing.
At a reported US$3 million a year, I’ll bet he has everything he would want and more in terms of material benefits, respect from his peers and so on.
D
Willl Kermit the frog replace George Bush as president? He has made numerous appearances on TV and is used to speaking in public. We haven’t spoken to Kermit about this and he hasn’t mentioned wanting the job in the past, but we needed put out an article today so we are going with the story.
however on second thought when Jobs started he was no marketing genius and made a whole lot of mistakes.
In that regard Ives could just do the same in theory
it’s stupid to think that a designer is the sole creator of the Apple hardware Ives is a brilliant architect/designer but
finally it’s a combination of functionality ,design and marketing that sells your product
For Ives to take over Apple he would have to have a grasp on all of the above, it’s the uniqueness of steve jobs vision, passion and technical expertise that makes him the perfect ceo for Apple quite honestly I cannot think of anyone that could replace him today… Ives ?? maybe …
“No, no, no and no. If you read the Times story closely you will see that it is what journalists call a write-around — a profile written without the cooperation of the main subject or his handlers.”
Hey PED, what is the difference between the “write-arounds” and the crap you write?
Don’t worry, I don’t expect my comment to stay around too long. You’ll delete this comment just like the others you’ve done in the past.
Board member Al Gore is already on tap to replace Jobs. Can’t believe a major newspaper could miss this fact.
The problem with this theory is that design, the external look of the products, is only part of the equation, a smaller part. How the products work via software is what makes a mac a mac. Wall street seemingly will never get that point.
This is why as the competitors line up for a “look” killer, assuming Apples success story is because of the way something looks, will fail because if i.e. Windows is at the core, it will have less significantly appeal.
I think there was some mistake made. Someone probably overheard a conversation with a bad phone connection between Steve and Jonathan where Steve was actually saying,” Jonathan, I’ve decided to replace myself with a clone, so don’t get any ideas of taking over Apple if something happens to me.”
Someone mistakenly heard the bad connection as Jonathan Ive…… taking over Apple if something happens to me.”
The successful of a company does not only concern in the product design, the CEO should have the ability to foresee the products that possibly could dominate the future market, and those products are also integrate to each other.
APPLE success because the computer industry needs both hardware and software, and APPLE understand this strategy, similar to the iPod and iTune. And now the iPhone and Internet/WiFi/Telecommunication.
Having the eligible design(hardware) and engineering(software) groups of people and lead by the powerful CEO, that bring APPLE to a great achievement.
indeed your headline is just as bad as the Murdoch Headline
i try to avoid agenda driven publications. i would never have heard about the Times article if not for this one. i’ll be honest, i’ve never read anything from murdoch’s times.
Jobs sense of style and perfection is but one facet of his personality. Ive lacks Jobs’ innate sense of what consumers want, nor does he have Jobs’ ability to drive people to incredible levels of achievement.
The idea that Ive could replace Jobs is moronic. Ive lacks Jobs’ contacts within the entertainment industry, his management experience, as well as Jobs’ ability to lead. Finally, there is no better marketer in American business than Steve Jobs.
In short, Ive is just a designer. There is no way in hell he possesses all of the traits necessary to run Apple, let alone replace an iconoclast like Steve Jobs.
Fortune, you should be ashamed of yourselves for buying into a notion bred more of English pride in Ive than in reality.
OTOH, just because one of Rupert’s minions say something doesn’t mean it IS worth discussing either. JMHO.
Poor Ive. Something tells me he’s not going to get a lot of productive work done for a while.
“Is Apple PR paving the way for Steve Jobs’ succession? No, no, no and no.”
Then why is your headline so misleading? YOu do (or allow to be done) the same thing you accuse Rupert Murdoch’s Times of doing.
He seems like an obvious choice to me. Well spoken, and he totally gets the same things that Steve Jobs gets. It’s good he is shy, given that Jobs is the current rock star CEO, but I think Ive could fill that role wonderfully if needed. He clearly has the passion for the product, which is what sets Jobs, and Apple, apart from every other ceo/company I can think of.
Just because he won’t grant an interview doesn’t mean it isn’t something worth discussing.

The Poison Ive Files!
It was about noon, I was at my desk filling out my “plot of the day” forms when all of a sudden the entire room went “white”, no pictures, no carpet, no furniture, just white. The hairs rose on the back of my neck so I whipped around, and there he was! It was the “Smoking Man”, you know the guy from the x-files. I asked, “what are you doing here?” He puffed lightly, then said, “”I was hired by Department 666a for effect, I’m bringing you their report!”
I replied, “hmmm, this must be pretty important, 666a hasn’t contacted me since the IBM thing!” - We both chuckled.
SMOKING MAN: “You can see sir it is entitled POISON IVE”
BALLMER: “Is that what you guys want to do? Seems a little extreme to me.”
SMOKING MAN: “No sir, they just thought it was a clever name for the new Anti-Apple operation”
BALLMER: “Time is money, let’s hear your report synopsis, chop-chop!”
SMOKING MAN: “Well sir, 666a has concluded that Jonathan Ive is more dangerous to us than Steve Jobs. He keeps Jobs on task, gives him great designs and ideas, keeps him inspired. Jobs makes the decisions, but, Ive gives him the good choices. Conclusion - Without Ive Jobs is just another CEO with an incompetent staff.”
BALLMER: “I can see that, so what’s the plan?”
SMOKING MAN: ” We have already started it. We have seeded the media with stories about Ive wanting to take over from Jobs. Our psychologist say that it is 94.5% certain that Jobs will eventually become paranoid and fire him!”
BALLMER: “Good plan! Now how do I get all of my stuff back? Where did everything go?
There was suddenly a flash of light. POOF! Everything was back just like it was, the Smoking man was gone and the carpet and walls were back!
I said, ” Wow, those 666a guys are good! All that’s left is this report and the smell of cheap Turkish cigarettes!”
