Christmas eve: Apple MacBook is Amazon’s No. 1 top-selling computer

picture-1.jpgDespite fierce competition from machines with more than twice the memory and price points hundreds of dollars lower, Apple’s (AAPL) white 120 GB MacBook has captured the top spot on Amazon’s (AMZN) list of bestselling computers this Christmas eve.

Helped along by rebates ranging from $75 to $150, three Apple-brand notebooks are on the top 10 list this morning. The other bestsellers are the 80 GB MacBook (No. 7) and the 120 GB MacBook Pro (No. 10).

Price cutting among the competition is even steeper. HP’s (HPQ) 250 GB Pavilion (No. 5) is selling for $999.99, 27% off the $1,375 list price.

The least expensive computer on the list, at No. 8, is the $381 Linux-based Asus Galaxy with a 7-inch screen and 4 GB of flash memory rather than a hard drive. Many expect Steve Jobs to announce at Macworld that Apple is entering the market for flash-based notebook computes. Apple’s thin MacBook, however, is likely to be larger, carry more memory, and cost a whole lot more than $381.

In Amazon’s list of top-selling electronics, a late surge by a heavily discounted portable hard drive has pushed an iPod off the stack. Apple had five of the top 10 spots for much of the pre-Christmas shopping period; it’s now down to four. See here.

UPDATE: As of 2 p.m. ET, the MacBook has been edged aside at No. 1 by an HP Pavillion with 160 GB hard drive marked down 37% (including rebate) to $679.99.

BOXING DAY UPDATE: This morning, the day after Christmas, the MacBook is back on top.

groovy baby…:)

That Barbara person did take it a bit far on her decision, but respectfully, thats her choice. I’ve owned both a mac and PC’s,and BOTH have pluses and drawbacks depending on how or what I need to do with them. I had to trade my Iphone for a blackberry ONLY because it doesn’t really support corporate email. it didnt make me sexy , but I thought it was a cool gadget. nothing more.
you go with what works for you

Posted By Kevin, Charlotte N.C. : January 2, 2008 3:19 pm

I see people still don’t get it. Barbara freaks out about not being able to have her computer fixed locally, but it wasn’t broken. They are not PC’s, I know that there have been Macs that have had repairs required, but since my first SE-30 in 1996, I have purchased 2 iMac’s, an iBook, and and a MacBook. I have never had anything break, I did sell the SE-30, but I bet it still works.
Yes there is software limitations, let’s see… Most software titles are not only avalable, they run better. You can get MS Office, Quickbooks, oh, you can’t get Barbie Makeover 4.5 well BIG DEAL

I was completely disappointed with Apple computers after trying a Mac out for about 2 months. Apple doesn’t seem to understand the concept of choice. In all of their software, they try to force you to do things the “one way” that they deem acceptable. It’s very annoying.

Besides that, it runs very hot and I am afraid that it will burn down my house after reading all of those stories about Macbooks catching fire.

Barbara Wilson does seem to be a bit of a fool.

I am relieved that Apple lost her as a customer. It is not worth dealing with an idiot to make a buck. I always believe that the customer should never come before common sense. It is better to pay a fool to go away than to try to cater to the fool and end up with pain in the butt. Barbara is a foolish troll who should be banished from using any Apple product for the rest of her life.

I love reading the Mac fan’s. “Please reconsider your purchase you will not be dissappointed”. I didn’t really think Amazon was a big computer retailer anyway, so lets get all excited. I think we should just wait for some data from the whole industry. People really need to take everything they hear with a grain of salt. I use Vista and it works just fine, but from what you hear its a nightmare. Reminds me of the evening news in the U.S., get some real world opinions of those who use the products and then make a desicion on which brand to go with. Just don’t like the firebombs and retarted commercials to try to trick people into buying something which reminds me of politics in the U.S.

I thimk that mac will rule the market in a few years.
But they better keep the quality not quantity.

@ Barbara
“I live in Olympia, WA; the nearest warranty dealer is either 35 miles to the north or south to Portland. I sent the computer back the same day I got it.”

Give me a break, troll. You buy a machine that works fine, has a free fed ex mail repair policy and then you return it cause the guy next door is not authorized to repair it if it ever breaks!! ?????

I am 90 miles from the nearest Apple repair place. My iBook broke and they fed ex’d a mailer box and had it back within 4 days of my original call. Its been working fine up until and ever since. Troll. :-)

@Barbara Wilson

Small world, I to am in Olympia. As far as service goes I would have never take my machines to 4th Dimension anyhow. I just had to have some warranty work done on my MacBook (motherboard) I called the 800 line, they sent me a self-addressed return box, I sent it out and within 2 days had it sent back fixed and running perfectly. Overall I think it went out on a Friday and was home the next Wednesday. I was very pleased and didn’t have to do any traveling. This must have been your first Mac purchase. I’ve been using them since 1986 and have been very please with their service. They have consistently been rated top of the list for service. You should reconsider your purchase you won’t be dissappointed.

I feel for these MacBook purchasers once they have to touch their machines. - Posted By Marc d’Odelbee, New York, NY : December 24, 2007 1:20 pm

I agree, they are REALLY going to feel bad once they’ve realized how much they’ve been missing all these years using Windows PCs.

Posted By lantzn, WA, State : December 24, 2007 4:27 pm

What’s really interesting is that the Asus Eee isn’t topping the list - it’s a battle between Apple & HP for first (I’m seeing HP at the moment). Also, the Nokia 800 at number 3? Am I dreaming this?

Posted By Ayrkain, Visalia CA : December 24, 2007 2:51 pm

Its the software, stupid. Who would want a computer with Vista?

Posted By jsm, madison CT : December 24, 2007 2:50 pm

You can’t judge sales of laptop by just amazon’s top 10 or 20 laptop sales. Tons of other site sale Laptops . Whoever has the lowest price in comparison will have that specific model sold the most(check pricegrabber.com or shop.com or stuff like that)
Just becuase amazon has a better price on apple alone, they will sell more of that brand. Other sites that has lower price of HP laptop will sell more HP just because their price is lower on comparison.
You have to look at total sales…not from just 1 site, since the price is different. May be Amazon overprice their other products, driving sales on only apple products.
I found this article’s result bias becuse of the way the the result is calculated. At least do a total of top 10 laptop selling sites or something in order to get a meaningful result.
This is totally bad statistic.
Apple is great product but after a few ipods, I think I am moving on to something else that is not the same every genreation.

I bought a Mac Mini from the Apple website only to find out when it arrived 12/20 that Apple had cancelled all service contracts with local service dealers [not just my local service repair shop]as of 9/07.

The web site still lists the dealers, but that is only for after the warranty is no longer valid.

I live in Olympia, WA; the nearest warranty dealer is either 35 miles to the north or south to Portland. I sent the computer back the same day I got it.

Apple wanted me to pay a 10% restocking fee [$78} for the return. I told them to not even try that trick as their website was misleading. So, instead they made me pay FedEx costs to return the item. (Oh, they would send a pickup ticket if I had a fax — I didn’t — or email it to my computer (which was packed and ready to be mailed back).

FedEx said Apple could have auhthorized a pick up ticket with them, but that this was happening more and more with items made in Ch1ina - - - yep, the MAC.

Might want to take a second look. HP is #1

ex ped: Right you are.

Posted By woody Cincinnati Ohio : December 24, 2007 2:01 pm

It’s not just about the memory (which can be easily expanded). It’s about being the most powerful, easy to use, well-made, quality computer on the market. The Mac is the only computer that can run all of the world’s software and operating systems on a single machine.

Like any of this matters. Amazon is one sales channel for the PC manufacturers. Lets see what the Q4 PC sales numbers bring for the manufacturers, rather than these “point-in-time” snapshots from one web retailer.

Posted By Dan, Boston, MA : December 24, 2007 12:10 pm

To add to what you have already said, out of the top 25, eight computers are Apple, the most of any computer manufacturer. HP is in second with seven.

Posted By David, NY NY : December 24, 2007 9:39 am

Hmm. Using the provided link, we can see that this article is already out of date. Not a single notebook computer in the top 20.

ex ped: Hmm. Link works for me, Steve. And when I go to Amazon/Electronics & Computers/Computers & PC Hardware/Bestsellers, it still shows MacBook at No. 1.
