Pseudo GPS coming to iPhone

picture-11.jpgWhat’s next for the Apple (AAPL) iPhone? A flurry of new features — starting with a “locate me” pseudeo-GPS function on Google Maps — according to leaks that have been making the rounds of the Apple blogs.

The scoop goes to GearLive.com, which for the past two days has been exploring what appears to be a pre-release version of firmware update 1.1.3. The improvements (documented with screenshots) that it has discovered so far include:

Responding to commentary that questioned the veracity of their claims, GearLive’s Andru Edwards and Nate True have posted an eight-minute video walkthrough of the new features that seems to have made believers of the skeptics. YouTube has removed its mirror version, but you can see the original here.

It’s not clear how the pre-release software made it out of Cupertino’s secretive skunkworks two weeks before Steve Jobs’ Macworld keynote. Ars Technica reports that it may have been leaked by someone at Apple as a Christmas present to an iPhone hacker to aid in jailbreaking efforts. As with the last update, version 1.1.3 disables unlocked iPhones and breaks third party applications that run on jailbroken phones.

Hey there - Andru Edwards from Gear Live here. I’d suggest removing the YouTube embedded video, as YouTube will be removing it from their service. It was uploaded there without our permission. Please visit our site to grab the real embeddable video! :)

ex ped: Will do. Thanks for the tip.

maddawg,

since you hate Mac’s and everything apple, why do you spend so much time posting here? Isn’t there a different board where you can find like minded people? or even build your own with your sweet technologies?

savages…

this pseudo “gps” technology has been around for years. it is based on the same concepts as gps, but instead triangulation occurs between handset and cell towers as opposed to gps satellites…it is definately a handy feature, though not as accurate as real gps.

Your just hearing about it now because software vendors such as google have finally created user friendly mapping applications to leverage the technology.

All cell phones have this “pseudo” gps technology built in as long as the mapping applications are available

If you download the new google maps the Locate Me function already works.

ex ped: can someone with one handy tell us if it works on the iPhone?

I don’t really understand the importance of GPS on my phone. I have one in my car but it’s mainly for my wife, who has a terrible sense of direction. In my entire life I have never been lost. EVER. And if I were, I would just consider it an adventure. Am I missing something or are there a lot of directionally challenged people out there?

I used to run a hiking shop and I used GPS 15 or more years ago when all they did was Lat/Lon and UTM with 200 waypoints (no maps). I wasn’t that useful to me then and it’s not now.

I don’t know how many people are wandering around lost because they don’t have GPS but have to wonder if it will help them since they can’t read a map anyway.

I hope people aren’t using this feature on their phones while driving (and if walking how dumb are you, can’t you read addresses?) because that’s an accident waiting to happen. It’s bad enough just talking on a cell phone.

Just like no FM receiver on iPod it gives something for tech nerds to gripe about but if it’s something that use up my battery I hope I NEVER have a phone with GPS.

I recently converted to a Mac from Windows for home use. I also have an IPhone having replaced by old cell phone and Ipod. From my short time with Apple, have to say I notice a marked difference in software stability. Ironically, the only programs that have crashed my Mac have been MS Office 2004. I also attended the MIT Technology Review conference in Boston this past fall, and noticed most of the scientists at the conference used Mac’.

Looks like we have a loud mouth here that’s just baiting for comments.

No sense in arguing with that kid. Mom couldn’t afford to buy him the Mac Mini with the tips she earned on Christmas Eve and he’s pissed.

How did he even get on the internet with that Tandy computer from Radio Shack?

so, maddawg, what phone ARE you using that’s so hot?…

LOL!!! $200/share and you malcontents continue to pan AAPL. No offense, but no one cares about your GOOG maps and other smart phones. AAPL has made it this far without you and will continue to flourish - $173.4 BILLION Mkt Cap!

LOL is right!

“Maddawg”,

If the technologies you build yourself “stomp anything Apple has ever created”, then it should be a very simple matter for you to show us an example of one of your products.

Have at it, O ye of little proof.

In responce to maddawg, in DC.

Where have you been for the past 25+ years?

Some people just have a hard time admitting some things are far Superior. Yes there is room for improvement, but

20 years as a copycat company? Are we speaking of Microsoft?

Seems to me, more products in the information age seem to mimic Apple.

BIG LOLs to the self proclaimed retard, brett

…”you’ll never move on to better things.” ???

from my cell phone, to my computer to my car…..the technologies i use or build myself STOMP ANYTHING APPLE HAS EVER CREATED!!

and even bigger LOLs to the “(pro)” tools you use…..if these are apple products your talking about….you’re far from a pro…that’s a fact! you’re considered a noob to use that KNOW technology and likely have little brains to comprehend anything more than pretty colors and shiny packaging.

no hating here noob….just plain facts…you keep your ‘pro’ stuff to yourself…i’m sure it’s simple enough for even you to figure out.

i’ll keep pounding out real work, art and functionality that keeps apple in the dust…i mean why would i stop now…been doing it for over 20 years and apple is still…well, just apple.

Motorola Q9h (AT&T) (and other smart phones) includes a built in GPS receiver. You can download Google Maps for Mobile (free), configure it (free) and have “real” GPS (free).

I’ve found the pseudo GPS to be really helpful on the Blackberry.

Posted By Farhan Memon, Norwalk, CT : December 31, 2007 4:51 pm

yep, i’ve had this feature of google maps on my windows mobile (T-Mobile SDA) phone for months. it is nice but don’t give Apple any credit for it. it’s all Google

Posted By J, Chicago, IL : December 31, 2007 4:50 pm

As impressive as the iPhone is, I gotta admit that this list of “ooh-aahs” is pretty lame. The lamest feature of all is the ‘pseudo-gps” when a number of devices, including the business market dominating BlackBerry, already has with a full-blown GPS.
Mac users, God luv’em, are still living and singing the praises of Apple, but unfortunately Apple has found that once you go outside the Apple user cathedrals, lots of other companies are working on software and lots of that software is ending up on hundreds of phone types, not just the iPhone.
If Apple sincerely wants to live outside it’s 3-5% (depending on who you talk to) of the market, they’d best step up and open development.
For the features the iPhone has, I can get them on ROM in other products.

Get a life man. Apple appeals to a different crowd of people. It all starts with the creatives, and if I’m retarded for being creative, prefer to use a (pro) tool for my guild then so be it, all I know is, I would rather spend my hard earned coin on something that streamlines everything I do, rather then freeze and hang on me every ten minutes. So you’re really not making a point here, just making yourself look like a closed-minded fool, which is why people like you will never move on to better things. Don’t hate because Apple is on the up and up, they can do their thing, if it booms then buy into it, but don’t trash talk something that is far beyond your intellect, and ability to create.

Posted By Brett NY NY : December 31, 2007 3:31 pm

This “locate me” feature is already included in the current build of google maps for blackberries and other phones.

Posted By Blake - WA : December 31, 2007 3:04 pm

lmao…a pseudo gps on iphone.

the lame attempts at making this thing gain more market share than it can make me laugh.

as i’ve said for months, my current phone which does the same and more than an iphone for 1/4th the cost doesn’t have a pseudo gps i’m sorry to say…..IT HAS FULL BLOWN GPS THAT COVERS THE GLOBE.

lol…keep on pushing the envelope with your old technologies at astronomical prices apple…i’m sure you’ll get to 1% market share someday….NOT!

just one question……is there any chance apple that you can actually INVENT SOMETHING NEW??

it’s been over 20+ years and you’re still taking already available technologies and packaging them up at 400-600% the cost of comparable devices.

cmon man…you’re making the information age look kinda old and cheap with this tactic.

sure you’ll always have your 1% of retards that simply don’t know they can get the same tech at better prices and you’ll also have the retard base that doesn’t really know anything about computers so they get the simpleton macs but lets get real…i mean over 20 years doing copycat product!?!?!?!?

does apple have anything they can actually contribute to the information age or are you just gonna keep on pulling up the rear with mediocre products?
