Analyst: How the iPhone will get corporate e-mail
Even before Apple (AAPL) launched the iPhone, says American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu, he suspected the device would have “mediocre” corporate e-mail support — stemming in part from Microsoft’s (MSFT) “lukewarm support” of Exchange on the Mac platform. (After all, Redmond has its Windows franchise to defend.)
That key weakness is likely to be addressed at the iPhone special event scheduled for next Thursday, according to Wu’s industry and developer sources. And in a report to clients today, he handcaps the ways that might happen:
- from internal development (most likely),
- third-parties including MSFT (next likely) with its ActiveSync technology,
- or RIMM Blackberry Connect (possible but less likely)
- or a combination of two or more.
“We do not think it will be easy to replicate the robustness of Blackberry push e-mail,” he adds, “but nonetheless, we view improvements as positive. Other enhancements we are picking up including improved security, better support of VPNs, and enterprise applications such as CRM.”
Why is it everytime I read an article or comment about the iPhone or any smart phone for the matter always talks about email this, video sharing that, I WANT GPS, good lord people…chant with me…”It’s a phone, it’s a phone, it’s a phone!”
Nodack, people will always complain as long as the Industry in general tells the customer what they have to do. Example, want an iPhone? Apple say you can’t buy one unless you take a 2 year contract with AT&T. What if you don’t like AT&T? Too bad, you’re stuck, they’ve been pork barreled and you’re stuck with either a great phone with sub-par carrier ro vice-versa. And that’s not just Apple I’m talking about, the carriers are just as bad. You can sign up with anybody but only have a few phone choices they “allow” you to choose. WHy can I only upgrade my phoneonce or twice a year when the techology comes out more often than that. What’s that you say? I can upgrade my phone but I have to recommmit my contract for another 2 years? FANTASTIC!!!
Regardless of what you might think of the iPhone or Apple, you should never be satisfied with being told what and how to spend your money by any corporation. How would people react if suddenly Ford told them that in order to buy an over priced car they had to agree and sign a contract to only buy fuel from BP and only drive on highways in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee that begin end in odd numbers and you can only drive 55 and no faster. But of course they offer all sorts of bells and whistles that other car company offer but in a sleek new design and oh yeah, if you try to change your own oil or spark plugs you void the warranty. I pretty sure that peopel would be up in arms and never want to buy that car. But I could be wrong…thats what all the Apple fan boys are saying now about any item offered by Apple.
iPhone will do corporate now and will probably do G3 soon too along with new apps from developers.
Now what will the experts find to complain about?
Totally agree with “Dave. Victoria. BC.”. The analyst seem like they’re writing for sensationalism newspapers instead of the likes of CNBC, Fortune, Newsweek, etc.
I read somewhere that bloggers are including “AAPL” and/or just creating incredulous headliners (e.g., “Apple planning first earth orbiting computer center!”
just to draw web site hits.
All this is an example of hype and perhaps attempts to move the market.
AAPL is just caught in the current market hysteria. The company is incredibly healthy and actually has the best outlook in years. Think about the product line: iMac, iPhone, iPod and AppleTV. Amazing!
Critics should be careful to study history first. The argument about AppleTV not having inventory! So short sighted, do we not remember when iTunes first came out? People squawked about no inventory. And now, the SDK late for SIX DAYS! The critics are so ridiculous. Do they really believe themselves?
There are those that relate to facts only and those that make up facts or think they can analyze without any idea of what the facts are.
Then there are those that buy into a company because they trust and believe in it, based on how good it’s products and track record with products and support are.
Apple has loyal customers who are and have always been loyal - from the day they purchased their fist and any Apple product - based on their experience. (remember the “Halo effect”?)
Because there ain’t no other company that makes solid, innovative, quality products, like Apple, it will always be trusted by it’s core (all) trusting supporters. That’s what really counts no matter what any “Johnny come lately” analyst who just doesn’t get it says.
Whether as an Apple customer or as an Apple investor, use your own experience and fact checks to determine the true value of Apple and it’s products. That’s if you really want to benefit from owning Apple, a company that has just become the Sony of this century, in every sense.
This writer doesn’t seem to relate to Apple that way - he is not even subtle ( remember that trait?) in his ever ignorant and ignoring of fact bias ( check the facts by reading his past “articles” and check them against the reality and facts - please do).
Investors
“We do not think it will be easy to replicate the robustness of Blackberry push e-mail,”
Why am I reminded of the Nokia exec who said something to the effect that “Apple just thinks they can waltz in and make a better phone than everyone else, others who have lots more experience.”
How’d that work out?
I love it when Apple just does its thing… make great products and then let the consumer decide which they do by buying. Visit an Apple Store and there’s no recession there all along
Negative people with their out of touch articles the last two months will never see or do not accept that Apple is growing in terms of revenue and market share in computers (8%)!! Buy now B4 $200/share again by end of 2008.
I usually dislike ‘analysts’ speculating, I prefer hard facts from Apple insiders like Tim Cook.
There was all this wild speculation on all sorts of wonderful and weird devices Apple would unveil at Macworld (none of which Apple hinted at) and when they came up with the Macbook Air (a great and innovative product) it was so different from the fantasy that the stock crashed.
Analysts and bloggers will speculate that iPhone 2 will do Time Travel and Cure Cancer. If when revealed it ONLY does TIME TRAVEL, headliners will blare “New iPhone Major Failure or New iPhone Disappoints!” and the stock will fall another 30% and Steve and Tim will be struggling to explain why Time Travel is a Good Thing.
I simply expect Apple to exceed expectations. as usual.
that is how it works. simple.

Why is it that everytime I read an article or comment on everything Apple, everyone talks about how they want email, video sharing or music on their phone but no one talks about the lack luster PHONE SERVICE, that comes with them. I mean these products are Phones first and everything else second. Why are consumers forced by Apple to accpet their product on the basis that they sign up for a 2 year contract with AT&T only? It’s my money, why are you (Apple), telling me where to spend it? What if Ford decided to make the iPhone equivalant of a car? It would be sleek and shiny, and have many bells and whistles to ooh and ahh over but in order to purchase you sign a contract to only purchase fuel from BP, tires from Ford, and the car would only be drivabale in 60% of the country and you couldn’t drive it overseas at all. Also, if you tried to change teh battery, oil ro spark plugs yourself they void the warranty, and, of course this would all be over priced. No one in their right mind would buy such a product, even if it did have better techology then 50% of the market, much less staunchly defend it everytime someone attack the idea or the company. Of course, I could be wrong…that’s what rabid Apple fan boys are doing now.
