Analyst: Apple to exceed 10 million iPhone goal by nearly 30%
Not much news was committed by Apple (AAPL) at its annual shareholders’ meeting Tuesday in Cupertino — although the shareholders did manage to make headlines by passing a referendum (which the company opposed) that gives them a nonbinding say on executive compensation. “I’m hoping that the ’say on pay’ proposal will help me with my $1 a year,” Jobs quipped after the measure passed.
But as Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster points out in a report to clients Wednesday, Apple did clear up one nagging ambiguity: does the company’s oft-stated goal of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008 mean that it hopes to sell 10 million phones within this calender year, or 10 million phones between June 29, 2007 and Dec. 31, 2008? It’s a question often argued in heated words in the comment threads of Apple blogs (including this one). “We confirmed with Apple,” writes Munster, “that the goal is to sell 10m iPhones ‘in CY08′ alone.”
Munster goes on to say that, according to his models, Apple will easily beat that target. “We are currently modeling for 12.9m iPhones in CY08,” he writes. “Exceeding the goal by 2.9m units or 29%.”
To do that, Apple will have to expand the market for iPhones in Europe and Asia, something it has said it plans to do this year. COO Tim Cook was asked specifically about the huge mobile phone markets in China and India, where traffic in unlocked iPhones is reported to be heavy. “We will one day enter China,” he said. “We’re not saying when, and we will one day enter India.”
For a particularly detailed account of the meeting, see AppleInsider here.
lol…
250 in 9 months…now that IS pathetic hope-n-pray investing!
i guess since 200 in 2 months as you stated 2 months ago didn’t pan out, you just restate another biased, unfounded, researchless number that fell out of your arse.
keep living in the fantasy world in your mind….
or you can state actuall financial facts that show aapl worth 250, let alone getting there in this slowing economy. you can’t and it isn’t!
simply stating a number on pure hope-n-pray type of tactics will only arouse you and your simple, lemming like, easily deceivable mind!
> Apple ANALYSTS says it will easily sell more that 10 million?
> WHAT TYPE OF GARBAGE IS THIS?!
> Where is an independent opinion?
frmad/Brian/whatever,
That’s just dumb… Gene Munster works for Piper Jaffray… he IS an independent opinion. Apple doesn’t have any analysts that comment directly to the public. I don’t think any company does. What the article means by “Apple ANALYST says” is an independent analyst covering Apple says.
I suppose if you wanted to, you can get your Apple information from an independent analyst covering McDonalds….
This post is hotting, and both of this post and this blog are high ranked in the top report of wp. But today we have generated
a more pro top blogs daily report . Now I’ve just posted the newest report , see and reply me some comments. Thanks.
Apple ANALYSTS says it will easily sell more that 10 million?
WHAT TYPE OF GARBAGE IS THIS?!
OF COURSE THEY WILL SAY THAT!
Where is an independent opinion?
Their demand has not grown but shrunk. The days of macfans making a fuss are over and people are looking for utility and price.
New MS Mobile phones are coming out as well as others (Blackberry) which will give Apple’s future interests serious alternatives.
Sorry this is a bogus story by Apple unless there is an independent 3rd party’s opinion. Apple’s own analysts will say the moon is made of cheese if told to do so.
So all you MacBook Air fans have to say about the product was that how it grabbed other people’s attention??? Well, obviously you Apple fanboys do starve for attention. Admit you don’t really care about features and function as long as it looks cool and helps you attract other’s attention.
Talk about being an idiot. JPM’s Bill Shope reduced revenue below what Apple’s revised guidance was back in January. Talk about clueless, and this joker doesn’t think Apple’s going to beat its already lowered revenue guidance. Wake up Bill and go find another company to short.
I have to echo the comment below about the Macbook Air. I’ve been carrying one for just a couple of days and it immediately stops all work when it comes out. Everyone has to get some face time with it before we can start a meeting. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. AAPL is selling at a bargain basement price right now.
JPM is aligned with hedge funds. Don’t sell , just keep buying Apple, which is going much, much, higher. Don’t let JPM and their friends steal your shares or your money. apple is the best tech stock to own by far!
listen to Bill Shope from JP Morgan and lose all your money. Apple will blow away earnings this quarter and will go much higher. Buy all you can and don’t pay attention to anyone from JP Morgan. They are in bed with the short sellers and are clueless.
Put your trust in Gene Munster ast Piper who says we are going much higher vs. Bill Shope at JPM who is in bed with the short sellers and is clueless.
can you folks read??? dennis..
fortune’s got nothing to do with this.. duh it’s an analyst with piper jaffrey , gene munster that wrote the report not fortune
No analyst needed here and no comment about the Iphone for now. This is about the Mac Air. I received my Mac Air two day ago by ordering directly from Apple site. The interest it gets from people is simply amazing. It stops them in their tracks in fact. Unlike anything I’ve experienced in quite a long time. I use my MAC in business and take it along to my meetings. Super light and sleek. Yesterday, a coffee shop full of people stopped to check it out. Lots of comments like “wow, I want one” Today, in a business meeting of 25 people, when I brought the Mac Air out, the meeting stopped as everyone checked it out! I haven’t scene a product effect a room like this in a long long time. Again, many said they wanted one. I think this is a HUGE development yet to be realized by the markets. The buzz of the Mac Air will grow exponentially as will the stock price (IMO) as the market realizes the demand for the Mac Air. Fact over fiction
Back and forth.
Fortune is like a tennis match.
good, bad, up, down
Like a woman, can’t make up their mind and change it with the wind.
Yeah, I said WOMAN. So back off ladies I don’t play that Politically correct game. HE HE :) < it a smile ladies
AAPlepie Gene Munster has always kept positive about Apple , he never bashed
Apple always purposefully understates. It’s evident just by looking at earnings reports, so when they say 10 million isn’t it safe to say that it’s a very conservative number? After their best earnings report in company history the stock tanks 40% with no real change in comopany fundamentals? I’ve been a huge buyer on this fall, and will continue to be at these levels.
wow, goes from bashing AAPL to raising the bar by 29% for sales of the much-maligned iPhone in a single breath! how’s that for expectation management? yet the stock price languishes…break-out time is coming, folks. any positive surprises manana at the media event and watch out, sportsfans!!
You actually wrote something positive on Apple. This is good. Oh ya, Apple is a bargain at these prices and will be 250+ in 9 months.
Munster is the only analyst that gets it, he must be an Apple fan himself , he sees the big picture.
I anticipated 13 mil sold but I think they are going to sell much more than that if they enter the asian market earlier
and they release the 3g phone sooner rather than later,
and in the end they might have to because people are going to stop buying 1 gen iphones and just wait for the 3g model..
just got my new macbook and I love it :-) it replaced a 12″ alum powerbook

After APPLE made an official announcement that Hong Kong is the place to sell unlock iPbone 3G, understand that smartphone and computer stores sell large quantities of iPhone to mainland China.
