Rush Limbaugh gets special treatment from Apple

limbaugh.jpgHere’s one way to get moved to the head of the genius line: complain about your problem on a radio show carried by 650 stations across the U.S.

On Feb. 12, Rush Limbaugh, a self-proclaimed “big Mac guy,” talked about two problems he was having with his computers after upgrading to Leopard — one with how his mail was getting backed up in Time Machine and the other with seeing his various “top of the line Mac Pros” through Back to My Mac.

“I’ve been very patient with my Apple rep, with my developer rep, and they’re working hard on it,” he said on the air, “but nothing gets done! All use file reports and get lost in the Apple bureaucratic system.”

“Do you think I ought to make an appeal, a direct appeal to Steve Jobs from behind the Golden EIB Microphone?” he asked his staff, one of whom joked: “His reply is going to be, ‘Mr. Limbaugh. Do us a favor and endorse Windows’.” (link)

We don’t know what, if anything, Apple’s (AAPL) CEO actually said, but Limbaugh got the TLC he craved. He reported yesterday that both his problems have been solved “through the diligent work of an engineer that Apple assigned my IT guy.”

I’m not going to mention the name of the engineer. I would love to, but if I did, this guy would be taking heat for the rest of his career from people for helping me. But they were very cooperative, and I think it’s going to end up having to be a system-wide fix, which is good, because it’s been discovered. (link)

There may be a patch for the e-mail problem in a future operating system upgrade, Limbaugh said, suggesting modestly that Apple might even name it after him.

“Rush has one set of standards for himself and one for everyone else…” WHAT?? Pay attention to what is going with the “progressive” aka LIBERALS that are attempting to turn the USA into a socialist utopia.

AlGore, Pelosi, Teddy Kennedy, Clinton’s, et.al., have always had a set of rules for themselves and another set for the “uneducated masses” who simply couldn’t get along without them.

Apple is a business and businesses are there to make money. They helped out a customer who has been giving them free advertisement for years. Regardless of his political affiliation.

“special treatment”???

when you have a business account with apple (as both I and rush do), this is standard treatment.

Posted By eric, palo alto, ca : March 14, 2008 3:50 am

When a company gives special treatment to someone, it’s the company’s right.

However if that is a problem, rather than attack the person getting special treatment, go after the company for showing favoritism.

Politics as usual in blog comments. Meh.

It took an Apple Tech to remove the Oxycotin Rush accidentally dropped into the cd-rom drive? Yeah that was probably it!

Posted By chang, san fransisco, ca : March 13, 2008 5:37 pm

Rush is the biggest promoter of the Mac and iPhone. And Apple has Al Gore on their Board. Rush promotes the best products because they are the best!

Posted By Gerry Smith, Tempe, Az : March 13, 2008 4:51 pm

Listen to the class-envy here. Cry baby libs crack me up. Just sit back, wait for your government checks and cry about what everyone else has.

How is it “special treatment”? Rush had a problem with his system, Mac sent an engineer to help. I have an idea people, do exactly what Rush did, make all of the same life-choices and take the same actions, then you can call Mac for “special” help. Or, sit expensive Lattes and complain.

Imagine someone getting better treatment because of fame. Such a thing is unprecedented in the history of American business…nay, the history of the world.

Posted By Michael LaBossiere : March 13, 2008 1:08 pm

Rush is Conservative leader who likes a product that suits his purpose. It makes no sense to attack him because he expedited a much needed fix. So why do some of these posts attack his lifes purpose? He does not have seperate standards for himself and others, he has a set of standards that many of us share and try to uphold. Its easy for the ignorant to attack someone who stands for something, but it requires a certain amount of fortitude to stand fast against those who stand for nothing. The only thing I think Rush hates is willful ignorance, which seems to be on full display in these attack posts against the man for pointing out a deficency,or lack of promised functionality, which, by the way, is what he does to Government run amok. GOD bless Rush Limbaugh.

I’m sure Apple didn’t mind all the free endorsements Rush has given it over the years. Nary a week passed that he didn’t praise Apple products in a friendly, off-hand way. Ditto his friendly gibes directed at PCs and Windows. And since, according to Apple commercials, PCs are the computer of choice amongst uptight, white-male squares, I should think they much appreciated his efforts to help them with this impenetrable market by leading by example. It’s only right that now, after his only direct complaint against Apple I’m aware of in the 15 years of listening to him that they make an effort to help him out. Consider too, if he with all his staff’s expertise are having problems, it can be safely assumed many other anonymous, unempowered users are as well. Publicizing the problems will no doubt help out many who are, in their isolation and powerlessness, no doubt, getting the same runaround we Windows afficiandos are accustomed to.

“But Rush always has one set of standards for himself, one for everyone else, so at least that is consistent.”

Unlike Al Gore…

What are you guy’s complaining about? I have a Dell PC, last Nov, 2007 through Dec 2007, more than five weeks,I waited for Dell to repair what turned out to be a bad graphics card. Eight days would have been a picnic in comparison.

Posted By Terry, Au train, Mi. : March 13, 2008 7:01 am

Wow. You mean millions of people actually LISTEN to this guy? I thought they were only listening to hear what the crazies were doing….

“Fan” person Evan…you can buy a new fan for under $10.00 and install it yourself in 5 minutes. Even a new PSU will take less than 15.

(If you can change a lightbulb)

Or else, I’ll do it for you for $50.

Would you treat someone special if that person gave you millions of $ of free publicity?

Posted By Bill - Birmingham, Alabama : March 12, 2008 10:32 pm

Bill, Hillary, Bob… What a bunch of whining haters. Wouldn’t you agree that If you spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on Apple “gear” (I remember when Rush got his “Mac IIx”. And If you spent 20+ years plugging your favorite computers to millions of people, who want your opinion. That you might like a little extra service. Your either - Karl Marx or Kidding Me if you say you wouldn’t.

Posted By Sterling Johnson, Castroville, TX : March 12, 2008 5:33 pm

Evan, are you aware that Unitek is an Apple certified tech a short distance from you in Canoga Park? In the future, you should be able to make an appointment with them to service your computer when you have checked to see that they have the parts. Hope this helps.

Posted By Tadd Peake, Montpelier, VT : March 12, 2008 1:41 pm

Evan, if you’ve really lost 9 days of work because of a computer repair, it might be time to invest in a backup computer. Even three days of transit time at full-time billable hours is more than enough to justify a cheap backup machine.

Really, get a Mini so you can get back to work regardless of how long your computer is down and out. It should only take a couple of hours to restore from your backup. You do have a current backup, don’t you?

Nine days is too long for a repair, especially for a non-essential repair. Ask Apple to advance your issue to the next level. Ask for repair order numbers, exactly where it is in the system. Get concrete answers. Apple is a company like any other that can make mistakes.

But when you send your work computer out into the great beyond, you never know what could happen. I’ve seen computers lost in transit, incorrectly entered in the repair database, and so on. Stuff happens.

My work is time-sensitive and lucrative enough that it has made sense to buy a new computer and save the old one for a backup machine once it came back home from a repair (or sell it on ebay). Good luck to you.

“Good thing his rot can’t hurt these apples?” What a stupid post….

Posted By PDS,Lafayette,CA : March 12, 2008 12:49 pm

all and all Apple has the best support out there but yes delays can happen, a lot of it I am sure depends on your location I am sure

Posted By love boat : March 12, 2008 12:12 pm

Conservative Rush gets along with Liberal Steve–all is right with the world.

Posted By Mike, Newport News, VA : March 12, 2008 11:56 am

The Genius Bar might not have a certain fan in stock from time to time. But in general Apple is providing a remarkable service no other PC maker can touch.

Here’s an interesting analysis of the Genius Bar and the hurdles the experts face every day.

Posted By Katie Lemon, Reno, NV : March 12, 2008 11:53 am

Thanks Rush. Found the problem and got it fixed for all of us.

Posted By l, Bishop, CA : March 12, 2008 11:46 am

Well maybe it’s unfair that Rush gets special treatment but who knows what kind of support contract he has, in the articles there’s always reference to “my IT guy” — I think the problems are in his home computers but he’s got IT staff so is more like a business set-up? Lots of businesses get house calls. Also the guy, like it or not, talks on hundreds of radio stations, his praising Apple all the time (he’s a big Apple fan) probably is equal to thousands of dollars of advertising resulting in sales — so he paid for Apple’s help many times over already. And maybe (ok it’s a stretch) that his fondness of Apple might liberalize his views (and his audiences) somewhat i.e he might think “hey, some liberal minded folks (like Steve and the Apple guys) really can build some good stuff”.

Posted By Dave. Victoria. BC. : March 12, 2008 11:15 am

Apple has had my Intel iMac for the last 9 days, just to replace a squeaking fan that I was told would take two to three days. My opinion of Apple has plummeted because of this Radio-Shack-like failure to have a simple part in stock for what I have been told is their most popular computer. 9 days I have had to postpone getting jobs done. 9 days I have to inconvenience others. 9 days going on 10 I have been unable to complete a special job for a friend who desperately needs it to be done. Why is there no loaner program at Apple. And to think an Oxycontin-popping person like Rush Limbaugh is able to get “special treatment”! I am incensed! And worst of all, I have had to use a Windows box to try to keep up to date w/email & a few other things Windows kind-of does. I am furious at Apple.

Posted By Evan Burroughs, Winnetka, California USA : March 12, 2008 10:49 am

What is the problem ?? Dont you guy ever call Apple tech support ??? i have called a few time and got wonderful help with all problems i have had …sure no one from Apple ever did a house call but … its not like only the rich and powerful get the special treatment from Apple… from the look of it maybe Rush is used to doing Radio, he dont know how to use an iPhone hahahaha “joking’.

Posted By Darren, Danville, VA : March 12, 2008 10:38 am

I really don’t get who complains about Apple’s support
between the Apple care and the Genius bar at the Apple store Apple has the best support in any tech category..period
In 15 years using Macs both personally and for work I only had minor issues, were always fixed promptly and with expertise..
Now, obviously Best buy is not the Apple store and these underpaid folks can’t offer the same support that the Apple store does but it’s not Apple’s responsibility nor their fault

Posted By lf ny : March 12, 2008 10:26 am

Way to go Rush! You’ve always been great at identifying the real issues and getting focus on them. As usual, the liberals (Jobs) agree that your right, admit their errors and then fix the problem.

Posted By Don Peterson, Wonder Lake, IL : March 12, 2008 10:10 am

Rob’s comment seems rather shallow. Al Gore is on Apple’s board, and the blokes at Apple are far from a conservative crowd, politically speaking. Rush just happens to have a large audience, and Apple has received free advertising from the beginning of his national show which occurred soon after the Macintosh was introduced.

I contend that if Apple was not filled with so many leftist politicos, Rush would have had a larger influence all along.

If Rush or ANY national talk show host enjoyed their Windows based equipment as much as Mac users enjoy their computers and related peripherals, Bill Gates and Microsoft would have been exploiting Rush and others as much as possible.

Posted By James, Ave Maria FL : March 12, 2008 10:08 am

As much as I dislike his political views , and really don’t like his radio show, his “fix” is actually very useful …
of course one can use gmail and actually access it from Apple’s mail and you’ll never loose a message .. but this way if Apple made it possible to recover lost emails from time machine and he and his staff helped I don’t see why criticize him this time…. I also hate the phone and prefer dealing with emails

Posted By lf ny : March 12, 2008 10:07 am

Limbaugh likes Apple? Yuk. Good thing, his rot can’t infect these apples.

Posted By Bob from Topeka : March 12, 2008 10:04 am

Maybe he paid 5000.00 an hour to get a “Rush Job”.

Posted By T.B. Dallas, TX : March 12, 2008 10:02 am

Why am I not surprised that someone who is famous, who influences hundreds of thousands of people (if not not millions), and who has millions of dollars to spend would get such excellent customer service while the rest of us are forced to put up with the incompetence of high schoolers posing as computer technicians at our local Best Buy stores?

I guess thats Apples idea of innovation for you! They’ll probably send him an I-Phone and a mac book air for his troubles.

Posted By Erik, Euless, TX : March 12, 2008 9:57 am

Yeah. Let’s call it the ‘Blow Hard Mail Fix’. Or how about the ‘Passive/Agressive Mail Patch’.

Little wonder he’s so effective at keeping the sheep of this country divided. He uses the best PCs out there: Macs.

Posted By Hillary, New York, New York : March 12, 2008 9:42 am

How typical. Tush gets special treatment because he uses his radio broadcast as a bully pulpit. The rest of us are not as fortunate.

But Rush always has one set of standards for himself, one for everyone else, so at least that is consistent.
