Early teardown: iPhone 3G could cost Apple as little as $100
The new iPhone costs Apple considerably less than the original to make, according to a somewhat speculative analysis by Portelligent, an Austin, Texas-based teardown specialist.
David Carey, Portelligent’s president, told EETimes that based on what his firm knows about the components Apple (AAPL) is using, the bill of materials for the new phone could be as low as $100. The first iPhone, by contrast, came with a BOM of $170.
“Apple’s really taking the gloves off on this one,” Carey told EETimes.
Although the 3G and GPS chipsets in the new model add to its cost, Apple is saving on other components, says Carey. The display that Apple paid an estimated $60 for last year, he says, may cost it half as much this year, thanks to a learning curve and engineering changes. The $100 Apple is charging for the extra memory in the $299 16GB model probably costs the company $20.
Portelligent’s conclusions are only guesses, of course, because the company didn’t actually have an iPhone 3G in hand to tear down.
Still the profit margin on the iPhone 3G is probably quite handsome, even by Apple’s rich standards.
AT&T (T) and the other carriers could be subsidizing the $199 sale price by $200, according to Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, which means Apple may be charging its partners as much as $399 per phone.
“If these numbers are true,” writes the Yankee Group’s Carl Howe, “the iPhone 3G could end up being the most profitable product Apple makes.” (link)
as usual, cheer leading analysts compete among themselves to hail the wisdom of Apple and how something Apple cud always do before (ie lower prices) is “great and most profitable” forgetting how they were drooling and whining that the previous business-model was the greatest thing.
this is not analysis. this is worship.
An analyst worth its salt wud realise that at the best this is a planned strategy (and in such case the analysts were worshopping the prevuious strategy for nothing, so they shud apologise) or a sign that the previous (and much more profitable per unit) strategy is NOT sustainable (in which case, there is little to celebrate like moonies).
then there are the delusional zombie band-wagon jumping zombies that suddeny “saw the light” of Apple.
I am sick and tired of this Apple sucking, guess that I am either a mazochist or i just ennjoy exposing the monies..
Great phone and rip off provider could tear down the 3g Iphone market shares.
Amazing how the people run when false news about Steve Jobs start being spread.
I bought into Apple huge and am very happy with my decision!!! I really wonder if a previous poster is correct in that the “talking heads” from the various stock channels and false info spammers on the web are trying to push the stock down in an attempt to buy in lower. I mean I know it happens every day on the weak stocks and lower volume stocks, but AAPL???!?!?
If everyone would just relax and ride the wave, then they wouldn’t be able to lower the price.
Steve is fine. There are articles explaining that his SUCCESSFUL surgery sometimes causes a little weightloss. It is absolutely normal and doesn’t affect your life longevity. Steve just has to change some dietary things and other parts of his life to ensure a healthy future. Which I’m sure he is doing with the best people in the field.
Just relax everyone and hold on tight to your stock like it’s your last bottle of water in the desert.
You will be very happy by year and beyond. AAPL is just getting its feet under it and I think we haven’t seen anything yet.
I DO own AAPL, but these are the reasons I’ve purchased it and also why I’m holding onto it!
I would bet that there is little talk about why it’s stupid to sell on non-confirmed obviously misleading health info about Steve because the big boys are filling large positions in the AAPL.
Once they are filled, the news will be touting the stock and why it was silly to react with panic…of course by then they will have gotten it for a song and will be riding it up with me.
They have made it hard to unlock . I don’t know about all countries though
In a previous comment, below, I explained how the iPhone only costs $100, but then I mentioned that this excludes R&D costs. But, upon thinking about the R&D costs … most of the technology is the same or evolutionary from the previous iPhone. Over the past 12 months, those who spend $400 and $500 on the first generation iPhone were the ones that paid for the R&D! Most of the R&D costs have already been recovered (5.4mill phones sold over past 12 months). The R&D costs for iPhone 3G are MUCH, MUCH lower!
Based on iPod and previous iPhone sales, A LOT of people will opt for the 16GB model, which means there will be a lot of $80 pure profit per customer sales.
As for the cost of the base phone (the 8GB), $400 is a lot. Let’s take a look at a few things. Prepaid phones, in which there is no subside sell for about $69 (including profit), so lets assume the actual plastic, circuit board, and wireless chipset costs about $35. Best Buy is now selling auto GPS devices for $89 now, and that includes the touch screen! Aside from software and R&D costs, let’s assume each phone costs about $35+$45= $80. Add in uncertainty and unexpected costs, and let’s say $100. Now, that completely excludes software R&D, hardware R&D, and licenses.
you know it is funny…but I finally realized that all stock pricing especially aapl is a function of news and how it is interpreted…it will be interesting to see how long it takes for this to reach a few analysts and then more widespread attention…and then will it be enough to overcome the latest issue with SJ’s illness…if the guy had the operation suggested and he did get sick …the results would be similar…there is a flu going around Calif…I know my father and I just had it and basically you run a low grade fever and you don’t feel like eating…depending on your immune system it may hit you harder or worse…because of his nutrition issues it also makes SJ more susceptible to other infections and the antibiotics may have been needed for that…regardless…antibiotics really mess with your digestive system probably more so for someone like SJ…but again imaginations flourished and even a refute from Apple itself didn’t keep the rumor from running itself out…and this is really the first article where I have seen the author actually state that the $200 subsidy would go directly to Apple…all the others viewed this as a detriment to Apple’s revenue taking away 3 cents per share…so this will accelerate Apple’s revenue growth significantly…in my mind they most likely will hit 2009 revenue estimates this year…further I believe from my own experience dealing with overseas manufacturers and supply chain management that Apple will show 2nd quarter sales as the first 22 countries to release the phone have probably placed stocking orders and given the amount of time for ocean freight, customs clearing and other logistics…those orders are either on the water or will be shipped prior to the end of the quarter and booked as 2nd quarter sales…Apple understands beating the earnings estimate and this is an easy way to accomplish it…to think that they have to wait until the sale is completed at the AT&T store in the US or elsewhere shows how little they understand business…and all the attention is on the iPhone with little given to the upcoming “back to school” program in the works…and finally the computer side of the business will benefit greatly from the “halo” effect of customer satisfaction with the iPhone in heretofore unexposed global markets…the coninued marketing of MAC against PC with greater stability for Windows can’t help but grow that sector…I know the continued unstability of VISTA on my relatively new and loaded HP has me considering an Apple computer for my next machine…so I concur a “hockey stick” growth setup is happening as we speak…Apple is a stock to hold as both a core and to trade around…
And as a postscript…I believe SJ has built a team and that team understands the vision…I also believe that a succession plan is in place…and that Apple understands the plan…and one of the talented individuals who appeared at WWDC will be perfectly capable of carrying this company forward if needed…This is SJ’s lagacy and I believe he would account even for the worst case…
couldn’t agree more. all this negative talk lately is just day-trader market manipulation and people trying to push the stock down so they can get in. apple will crush it. we are still at the base of the hockey stick for this company. and the IPhone is the inflection point upwards.

Face it pat, if you don’t like Apple enough to spend time searching out Apple stories just so you can talk bad about them then there is something seriously wrong with you.
