Axel Springer’s 10,000 employees switching to Mac

Here’s an unexpected Independence Day gift for Apple.

Axel Springer AG, one of Europe’s largest newspaper publishers, with 10,000 employees and more than 150 papers in 30 countries, including its flagship Die Welt, announced on Friday that it is switching its entire operation from PCs to Macs.

In a YouTube video, posted below the fold, CEO Mathias Döpfner lists four reasons for the change:

  • Most of the company’s layout work was already being done on Macs
  • Macs are more user friendly than other computers
  • Apple creates the most elegant computers
  • Macs are cheaper to buy and easier to maintain than they were in the past

The changeover will take five years and when complete, according to Döpfner, will make Axel Springer (SPR.F) Apple’s (AAPL) second largest corporate customer, after Google (GOOG).

Some posts are unbelievable - everybody should work with what he/r is most attracted to. Couple of years ago I would have said - Apple? naaa can’t be better. Now I know better and I’m saying that because I have switched everything I do to Mac. But again - if somebody likes the looks and handling of a PC - so be it. What I cannot stand is people talking about stuff they have never tried or touched.

Answer to Baboo:

You are wrong! Microsoft sold 150 million Vista licenses to the market! Not to customers!

150 million Vista licenses != 150 million Vista installations

Some experts say, 3/4 of all vista licences are “not in use”

Posted By Werner, Freiburg, Germany : July 8, 2008 9:14 pm

Microsoft sold 150 million Vista licenses in 15 months = 10 million per month = 333k per day = 13,880 per hour.

10,000 new Macs in 5 years = 10,000 new Vistas in 43 minutes

If they’re switching 1 MILLION Macs = 3 days of Windows Vista

If they’re switching 10 MILLION Macs = 30 days of Windows Vista

Conclusion: 10,000 new Macs = nothing

Macs have a smaller TCO than Windows machines due to better security and other factors. Mac OS X runs faster than Windows on equivalent hardware. Due to a lack of spaghetti code needed to maintain backwards compatibility. This also means a lower hardware spec is required to run a Mac at the same speed as a typical Win system which makes an equally fast Mac a little cheaper to buy.

For those with no clue there is Windows. For those with a brain (and some taste) there is the Mac).

Apple Cinema Display = $599 Base model Mac pro = $2,799 New suit for my buddy to show me his new Mac setup = $300

The look on my buddy’s face when I tell him I just got done building a custom PC thats twice as fast for nearly half as much money = priceless

For those stuck in the late 80’s early 90’s mentality that Macs are faster there is Mac

For everyone else there is PC

@k:

“Mac’s” = Macs
“But really folks please at least” = commas won’t save this
“-” = — Em dash, not hyphen
“cant” = can’t
“And by the way it is spelled” = And, by the way, it is spelled

Your writing sucks, loser. Where do you get off correcting anyone?

“Those 10k seats = not much of a dent to MS.”

You don’t understand. MS can’t stand ANY loss. “All must know that resistance is futile.” If word gets out that it’s possible to do without Windows, people will switch. Believe me, chairs are being thrown over this.

“LOL! Ahhh FINALLY Apple is getting more componies and corporations onto their side. Microsoft, one word. OWNED!”

Not picking a side here - I work with Mac’s and Windows equally in my position; But really folks please at least run a spell checker, assuming you cant spell - before posting some inane comment about how much you hate Microsoft and love Apple. Apple is just another business (like Microsoft but with less market share), one that has done well for itself considering where it has been - and hopefully they are the competition that will drive Microsoft to improve their products so that we have options and more innovation.

However saying “Microsoft, one word. OWNED” is somewhat silly. Those 10k seats = not much of a dent to MS.

And by the way it is spelled companies throughout the English speaking world.

I was a GRAPHIC ARTIST with the CALIFORNIA BASED SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWSPAPER, The Ventura County Star.

We used MAC, and all was well, when the rest of the systems were working. The MACS were great, but they still interfaced, or tried to interface, with the PCs. The IT people had job security.

BUT, they have since fired all the GRAPHICS DEPARTMENT and “farmed out” all the design work, and advertising to a local company graphics company. Some of the newspaper’s employees went to work for them, but they are losing benefits and pensions and the like. They also took cuts in pay, which wasn’t that high to begin with.

Also I just heard that the Los Angeles TImes is laying off almost 20 percent of its employees, the USA NEWSPAPER BUSINESS is going to the INTERNET.

THIS IS SAD! WONDER IF USING APPLE IN EUROPE is just one step closer to using less people getting the chance to do these jobs! Wonder how long the Newspaper will stay in business.

GOOD FOR APPLE, but if they only need a few people and a few GRAPHIC DESIGNERS, and farm the rest out, like they are doing here, it isn’t going to be that much of a big deal in the end!

Jan, Berlin: This is a badly translated article. While they switch to Apple Hardware, they will continue to run Windows on a part of the machines.

Is that why the reasons given are:
1 Most of the company’s layout work was already being done on Macs [Done on Macs, not done on Windows. Kinda pointless to switch if most work was being done on Macs running Windows]
2 Macs are more user friendly than other computers [The reason it is more user friendly is Mac OS X. Put Vista on them and they become just another Windows PCs].
3 Apple creates the most elegant computers [which becomes less elegant once you use only Vista on them. Mac's elegance is in the OS, though the hardware looks good.]
4 Macs are cheaper to buy and easier to maintain than they were in the past [Computer maintenance is not all hardware related. As hardwares are pretty similar, the big difference is in the OS. For example, maintaining security updates, cleaning up malwares, and so on.]

They may run Windows occasionally to smooth out the transition, though, as usually is the case.

Great for them … I can’t wait till there system’s are hacked and all their information is posted on the internet. Maybe then people will realize that the pretty UI comes at a prices

Posted By Anonymous : July 5, 2008 1:01 pm

So what’s the BIG deal, I mean; it isn’t like Apple’s Mac solutions can’t compete well against the Windows solutions out there in the corporate/enterprise space. If I was a CIO of a fortune 500 company, you bet I’m gonna pick the best of the best and though Microsoft delivers some good technologies here and/or there, they aren’t the only game in town these days and Apple is poised is make a dent in the corporate/enterprise space even though it won’t happen overnight and won’t be Apple’s bread-n-butter market.

To Jan, Berlin who says - “This is a badly translated article. While they switch to Apple Hardware, they will continue to run Windows on a part of the machines.”

This is a meaningless comment. History shows that the ability to run windows is a deal maker for switchers to Mac, but once they do, they rarely run windows and only when they have specialized apps that require. Rest assured that the same will happen here. They are buying Macs, and will get out from under the MSFT trap as quickly as they possibly can once they start using OS X.

The stylish Apple fanboiz over here will hate to be associated with Axel Springer Verlag. Really? What the hell do you know? I’m a shareholder. It’s business. I love it. So shuddup.

Posted By earl, shrevport, LA : July 5, 2008 9:06 am

This is going to HURT Apple’s brand image with the progressive crowd over here in Europe immensely.

Axel Springer Verlag (which is independent from the scientific book publisher Springer) is a far-right tabloid publishing operation far bloodier than Rupert Murdoch’s Fox, Sky and News. It publishes papers that no self-respecting person wants to be seen with.

The stylish Apple fanboiz over here will hate to be associated with Axel Springer Verlag.

Wow!

this was my wow-effect, which MS was talking about.

Posted By Igor Bratislava : July 5, 2008 4:25 am

This is over 5 years people; that averages about 2000 Macs a year. This is not going to do much to the share price of Apple.

What is disturbing is the fact that PED is reporting that Axel Springer AG will be the 2nd largest corporate user of Macs with 10,000 employees.

I could think of at least 2 other corporate enterprises that I’ve personally worked for had about those numbers of Macs.

What is your source PED?

ex ped: Axel Springer’s CEO.

Do you know what this positive news will do for Apple’s stock price. Absolutely nothing. The same as any other good news about Apple’s potentially increased revenue.

No, I’m probably wrong. The stock will be down another $5 because somebody reported they heard Steve Jobs sneeze.

regarding CS4, it will all be OK when Apple buys Adobe. And what about the comment about the author being Mac-centric? This isn’t an apple plug, this is fact. Watch the video Mark.

Posted By Fredrik, London : July 4, 2008 8:44 pm

Hey ped, it looks like you’ve been sucked into the reality distortion field. Way too many entries here lately with nothing but good Apple news - no FUD, no sarcasm, no retarded analysis. What happened? Did you go to MacWorld or WWDC?

Really, I’m concerned, are you okay? Your friend, mark.

Posted By mark, boston, ma : July 4, 2008 8:04 pm

Great news. Just goes to show the whole world is turning to Apple, the user-friendly-yet-sophisticated computer.

Posted By Alice Licht, Winnetka, IL : July 4, 2008 7:51 pm

A very smart move. Not only will the save money in the long run. Maintenance, training and security will be much easier and cheaper.

Posted By slappy, San Francisco, CA : July 4, 2008 7:31 pm

one could assume adobe CS4 still is not coming to mac any time soon? What will happen to adobes way of working if more Dtp companys and other 5000+ size companies follow axel springer lead?

Adobe needs to rethink their level of “commitment” to the mac platform. preferably now.

I assume they’ll each get an iPhone to keep up with current events. How wonderful!

Posted By Kim, Melbourne, FL : July 4, 2008 4:49 pm

This IS great news. One has to think not only of the 10,000 seats themselves, but this will have its own “halo effect”

I am sure that a lot of their workers will go and switch to Macs at home, but other businesses will start looking more seriously at Macs as well.

My guess is that the 5 year time frame is so that certain business processes they have can migrate.

Posted By jmmx Portland Oregon : July 4, 2008 4:44 pm

This is a really big story! Wow. With so much media attention on the iPhone release, it’s a important reminder that Apple’s leading business is computers. And that business is doing very, very well at this time. Wait until the back to school numbers come out!!
