The new iPod nano: A tale told in spy photos

Source: Engadget.com

This must drive the folks at Apple absolutely bananas.

They labor to create an elegant new device, designed to entice the masses and restore a sense of childlike wonder. They try to stage manage every aspect of its unveiling. They leak copies to selected reviewers. They rent a hall and schedule a special event. They invite the analysts and the mainstream media. They book interviews with the TV networks.

But before they can enjoy their day in the sun, the rumor sites have done their best to spoil the party by publishing practically everything there is to know about the new gadget — including fuzzy photos of dubious provenance — except its retail price.

The latest Apple (AAPL) product to be subjected to this process: the so-called fourth-generation iPod nano, expected to arrive Sept. 9 at Apple’s “Let’s Rock” event.

Below the fold: the new iPod nano’s unauthorized unveiling, as revealed layer by layer in the rumorsphere. (Click on the photos to view them in their original context.)

Looks like a mini casket from superior view in its case. Don’t like it at all, especially the rainbow variety of colors.

Apple still hasn’t fixed the issues with the earlier Nano versions, and they won’t even address them such as the “horizontal line of mystery” across the screen of either over active pixels or dead pixels.

There is evidence of these problems dating back to posts in 2003 and since.

My Nano has the same problem and when I called support they literally tried to dismiss it as my imagination and wouldn’t provide an email address where I could mail a high-res photo of the problem.

This, along with everything else such as when their Mac Books have buggy video cards and they’re reluctant to replace them, or when a known bug exists with licensed iTunes songs that can’t be unlocked and authorized to play after you reboot your PC…. why would anyone rush to buy another iPod from the Cult of Steve ???

OH, and what does any of this other stuff besides the “line of mystery” have to do with the new Nano ???? /// Plenty since with Apple it’s all about the integrated products, the iPhone, iTouch, iTV, iPod and iTunes.

All Apple Products have a core component called “U-Screwed” and the version number is whatever amount of money you’ve paid for Apple Gear.

OH, and I hate Micro$oft gear too, just because M$ is junk doesn’t make Apple quality.

“Yet another thing to end up in our land fills.”

Not if you bring your old iPod back to apple. They will recycle it and you also get a 10% discount on a new iPod.

Products don’t have to become waste if we design their entire material cycles.

I have to say the new design isn’t doing it for me. The rounded face and edges completely go against the flat, sharp-edge, minimalist design that Apple has (so far) been able to pull off brilliantly.

Jay, that looks like Steve Ballmer in one of his gyrations on stage at a Microsoft event.

The form factor is very appealing but it’s the other stuff that will be announced that will make the difference. ;-)

Do we can a video yet? Why would we buy this rather than the itouch?

Lame, and over priced to the hilt. Yet another thing to end up in our land fills.

Wow! If seeing is believing, Apple’s still the home run king….

“This must drive apple bananas” …

So let’s contribute to their troubles by posting another article ourselves! :P

In the second picture to the right, is that a picture of a Microsoft building?

Anyway, the device is sexy, sure, but like all Apple devices nowadays, I don’t like them for video because of the screen size. =/ I *still* prefer a broad screen like the PlayStation Portable (which is still my favorite mp3 player on the market, mind you). Solely as a *music playing device* though, this Nano is very very sexy. For music alone, do think smaller is way better.

Philip Elmer-DeWittSilicon Valley veterans like to joke that Steve Jobs must be surrounded by a reality distortion field; if you get too close to him, you start to believe what he's saying. Thanks to the success of the iPod, the launch of the iPhone and the renewed interest in the Mac, Apple has made believers out of millions of customers - and made a lot of investors rich. But Philip Elmer-DeWitt believes that an ounce of skepticism never hurts when writing about the company. He should know.
