Steve Jobs photos: Then and now

“Steve Jobs’ appearance will be key,” wrote Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster before Apple’s widely anticipated “Let’s Rock” special event in San Francisco Tuesday.

Jobs’ gaunt features and evident weight loss at his last public appearance - at Apple’s annual World Wide Developers Conference in June - drove Apple’s (AAPL) stock price down and set off speculation about what might be wrong with him. (link)

In 2004 Jobs had a cancerous tumor removed from his pancreas (see here). Earlier this year he had a second operation to deal with digestive problems stemming from that operation, according to the New York Times (link).

So how did he look today? You be the judge. The photo on the left is from June 9. The one on the right was taken Tuesday at the Let’s Rock event.

For a blow-by-blow account of the event, see Jon Fortt’s live blog here.

I watched both videos. He looked the same in both; slightly worse now. His voice has been affected however. Let’s pray he completely recovers soon.

man he really loves that shirt….

Posted By Luis, Miami and FL : September 10, 2008 11:07 am

he’s 1 year older and 1 Billion USD richer

Posted By Max Shiny, Ivrea, Italy : September 10, 2008 2:41 am

First, his turtleneck shirt was NOT brown. That was Engadget’s digital camera. If you don’t set the proper white balance, the picture has funny colors, like white being yellow or black being brown.

Second, both of the sample pics look old. He had his sleeves pulled up today.

Third, as others have noted, Steve has had a Whipple procedure and looks totally normal for a patient having undergone that invasive a treatment.

ex ped: His sleeves were down at the start of the event. Check the video.

What kind of people base a company’s performance on the appearance of the CEO? Are we that shallow? I don’t own an IPOD, so I guess I don’t count anyway.

Posted By B.J. Roland, St. Louis, MO : September 10, 2008 12:07 am

That wasn’t really Steve, it was a double.

Posted By Grant, Phoenix, AZ : September 9, 2008 8:46 pm

I work in a cancer center, and he looks just fine. I wish many of our patients could look that good. I agree with many of the comments about the obesity problem in America. Just because someone is slim, people assume some tragic illness. I don’t doubt that he has trouble keeping weight on due to his surgeries, but it is hardly like he is at death’s door.

Posted By Cynthia, San Jose, CA : September 9, 2008 8:38 pm

He looks….somehow….a year older…?

Posted By Boro, Zagreb, Croatia : September 9, 2008 8:36 pm

saw steve wearing a new white shirt and jacket in Tokyo keynote once. he changed more in the first few years he was back at apple. I don’t think he wears the same thing everyday either. someone once said he wore shorts and flip flops in the summer.

Posted By dude, sacramento, ca : September 9, 2008 7:57 pm

you are mistaken. if you think JOBS is a one man show you are naive. Yes, JOBS takes all the credit but I promise you some minion of his developed, engineered, designed, and invented the idea for JOBS and APPLE. Jobs just happens to be the largest shareholder.

Posted By Michael. Austin, Texas : September 9, 2008 7:28 pm

This is no mystery.

It’s about pancreatic function. The pancreas creates enzymes that digest fats. If it goes awry you can’t handle fats and have to change your diet radically to remove them from your diet.

Try living on 15-20g of fat/day TOTAL and see how fast you lose weight!

On top of that, you often need to rest the pancreas by not eating real food for 1-2 weeks at a time (you are fed via an IV or nasal tube). Bedrest is part of the deal, so your muscle mass drops too. It all adds up to a look like Steve has today. I bet he is 100% healthy otherwise.

I have dealt with a few bouts of pancreatitis so I have an idea of what he may be experiencing. I lost about 50 pounds in fewer than 3 weeks. I’m skinnier but otherwise healthy. So is Steve, I bet.

The same idiots who claim that Steve Jobs looks dangerously thin are the kind of tin foil hat paranoids who believe that the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will bring about the end of life as we know it. And It makes me think of the physicists at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project who predicted the Trinity atomic bomb test would cause the atmosphere to burst into flames, consuming the earth. Mind you, atomic weapons aren’t cool. But the fears, rumor-mongering, outright ignorance and hidden agendas are the product of lesser minds.

There’s nothing to see here, folks. Move along.

Funny, he looks exactly the same to me on these photos except the angle and the lighting is a bit different. Also the photo at the right is a slight darker where the light on his face is coming from an angle that makes his eyebrows casting shadows on his eyes thus this light setup creates a false impression of a typical face of someone who lost weight because of possible illness. Also the photo on the left is a bit overexposed and in a more yellowish color tone. Anyway he is exactly the same to me on both photos!

I wish I could get down to that fat level! Geeze people, the nation is overweight to a level never seen before and yet financial analysts harp on Mr. Jobs’ being too thin.

Posted By Matt, Dublin, CA : September 9, 2008 5:43 pm

poor guy…

looks like he’s got the AIDS.

i hope he gets better for his families sake.

Posted By maddawg, wash. DC : September 9, 2008 5:23 pm

Old news. He has problems absorbing nutrients, not cancer. He’s not going to die but Apple should be more transparent on the guru.

Posted By James T. Albany, NY : September 9, 2008 5:16 pm

I am the same age as Steven Jobs and I sure wish I looked as young and energetic as he does!

Posted By Nils, Stockholm, Sweden : September 9, 2008 5:14 pm

It’s funny how everyone’s commenting about the clothes now, when this is the first time he actually changed them slightly.

He has worn the same black turtleneck and blue denims on every single one of Apple’s keynote events for the last 10 years or more. Today he wore a brown turtleneck, and hardcore Apple fans immediately gasped “OMG! It’s BROWN!”.

So no, Cathrine, this is as far from “exactly the same clothes” as Steve Jobs will ever get. It is in fact his first small step away from wearing the same clothes every time!

Posted By Fred, NY, NY : September 9, 2008 4:26 pm

He looks healthier today, tan even, go Steve

Posted By Mac Mama Petaluma, Ca : September 9, 2008 4:17 pm

this is not mean.
this is cnn money and steve’s health is related to apple stock price, becauase without him…apple is nothing.
just like warrent buffet to his company.

Posted By andy ,tx : September 9, 2008 4:00 pm

.. what sprung to my mind was that he’s wearing exactly the same clothes.
;-)

Posted By Cathrine, DC : September 9, 2008 3:38 pm

A man’s life and health are at stake and all anyone can talk about is the stock price and future of Apple? Come on! Really.. Now that is what is wrong with the world these days.

Posted By Anonymous : September 9, 2008 3:35 pm

Why is this news? Who cares? Seriously CNN, isn’t this kind of stuff that ET and the Insider are for. Embarrassing.

Posted By Jesse, Santa Rosa CA : September 9, 2008 3:24 pm

From Jim Cramer’s “Stop Trading!”:

The segment was interrupted with breaking news that Apple(AAPL - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr) CEO Steve Jobs had announced after the company’s “Let’s Rock” event that he was in good health and that unnamed hedge funds were responsible for the weakness in Apple’s stock.

“I wish he hadn’t said that,” responded Cramer. “That’s worse than saying they’re going to report bad earnings. The unnamed hedge funds are taking down Washington Mutual(WAMU - Cramer’s Take - Stockpickr). The unnamed hedge funds are in charge, and they’re dangerous.”

Well, there you have it, folks: Collusion.

There’s only one way to battle these jerks, and that’s to refuse to sell when they start a panic.

Hold long, folks.

Posted By Sacto Joe, Sacramento, CA : September 9, 2008 3:22 pm

mind your own business and leave people alone. speculation and assumption get’s all in trouble, only he knows what is going on and it should remain that way.

Posted By MAB Austin , Texas : September 9, 2008 3:21 pm

So Steve Jobs isn’t a FAT*SS like most of the rest of the population.

Cut the guy a break!

Posted By TM, Cortland, NY : September 9, 2008 3:05 pm

I think he looks healthier now. He doesn’t look any thinner and his color looks much better!

Posted By ronden, Orlando FL : September 9, 2008 2:46 pm

I’m sorry but what does this say about succession planning at Apple? If he dies tomorrow, does the stock lose 20%? Is relying so heavily on one leader bode well for builiding a sustainable enterprise? I think not.

Posted By Mike SF,CA : September 9, 2008 2:40 pm

Looks the same

Posted By Art–Florida : September 9, 2008 2:39 pm

Looks good.

Posted By Vogel–Florida : September 9, 2008 2:38 pm

How do you measure appearance? I think Jobs looks better now than he did in June!

Posted By Anonymous : September 9, 2008 2:36 pm

How sad that people think the fortunes of Apple rest solely on this one man. It undermines the incredible work of everyone else at Apple, such as the people who actually design all these groundbreaking devices.

Posted By HappySpaceInvader, UK : September 9, 2008 2:33 pm

I’m curious as to how one “looks energetic in a photo”?

Posted By Chan, Denver, CO : September 9, 2008 2:30 pm

Uhh, comparing the pictures from engadget with these two, it seems to me that the left is from today and the right is from june…

Posted By Jimbo Jones, Los Angeles, California : September 9, 2008 2:26 pm

I think he is just going to look like that going forward - but he seems energetic, happy, and healthy.

Posted By Dave, Tucson, AZ : September 9, 2008 2:25 pm

He’s a bit thin, but what in the world is wrong with that?

Posted By Joan, Orlando, Florida : September 9, 2008 2:25 pm

You got the pictures reversed. Not a huge difference though.

Posted By Mill Valley, CA : September 9, 2008 2:24 pm

Steve Jobs looks the same in both photos. Let’s be careful about our health opinions.

Posted By Martha Korman, Redding, CT : September 9, 2008 2:22 pm

Steve jobs had a large portion of his digestive track removed, and literally re-routed, as part of his successful pancreas procedure. Most patients that undergo this rare operation lose weight, and have trouble gaining it back. Jobs looks completely NORMAL for someone who has undergone this procedure. Several doctors have testified to this effect.

There is nothing wrong with Jobs, and if he were terminally ill Apple would follow the LAW and disclose this to investors. The conspiracy theorists need to give it a rest.

Posted By Eric, San Diego, CA : September 9, 2008 2:21 pm

he looks in better shape to me. fuller face. stronger posture. it’s not like he was going to gain 100 pounds in 3 months.

Posted By Matt, Boston, MA : September 9, 2008 2:20 pm

He looks fine to me. Yes a bit thin, but tan and basically healthy. He seems energetic in the pix I saw on endgadget:

Philip Elmer-DeWittSilicon Valley veterans like to joke that Steve Jobs must be surrounded by a reality distortion field; if you get too close to him, you start to believe what he's saying. Thanks to the success of the iPod, the launch of the iPhone and the renewed interest in the Mac, Apple has made believers out of millions of customers - and made a lot of investors rich. But Philip Elmer-DeWitt believes that an ounce of skepticism never hurts when writing about the company. He should know. He's been covering Apple - and watching Steve Jobs operate - since 1982, first for Time Magazine, then for Business 2.0, and now for Fortune.
