The iPhone’s midnight update

OS 2.2A major update to the iPhone’s firmware arrived at the stroke of midnight Thursday, surprising Apple (AAPL) watchers and taking just a little steam out of the Friday launch of Research in Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry Storm.

iPhone 2.2 contains dozens of fixes and improvements — most of which had been telegraphed in advance through leaks from the developer community. Apple’s handy checklist:

  • Enhancements to Maps
    • Google Street View
    • public transit and walking directions
    • display address of dropped pins
    • share location via email
  • Enhancements to Mail
    • resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of e-mail
    • improved formatting of wide HTML email
  • improved stability and performance of Safari
  • Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)
  • Decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
  • Improved sound quality of visual voicemail messages
  • Pressing the Home button from any Home screen takes you to the first Home screen
  • Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings

No. 1 on that list — Google Street View — is the first new feature we tried out. It also happens to be the most conspicuous trick that Google (GOOG) Android phones performed that iPhones couldn’t.

Well, now they can. For example, here’s the street where Steve Jobs works, as seen through an iPhone sitting 2,944 miles away:

street-view

One caveat: The iPhone lacks an internal compass, so it still can’t deliver Google’s vaunted Compass Mode, where the view changes as you swing your smartphone left and right (see here).

For more on what the update offers, see here. To download it, plug your iPhone into your computer and click on Check for Update. iPhone 2.2 weighs in at 246 MB and installs in less than 10 minutes.

To Jamie re “All this about “hard drive mode” is a bit silly, since you can synchronize the iPhone with your Mac or PC with the included USB cable.”

Really? OK, so I have an Excel spreadsheet on my work PC which has iTunes on it. I want to take it home. I can do it easily on a) a 5 year-old USB thumb drive b) a 5 year-old Windows Mobile phone with an SD card in it. But I can’t do it on my 2008 iPhone.

It sounds like everyone needs to get over the fact that it is a phone and not a personal computer. The phone is amazing and easy to use and to be honest with you its easier to use then just a regular cell phone. I got my moneys worth and i paid the original price. Now thats something to gripe about.

I think Apple has some loose screws, why in the world have they not developed cut and paste? Idiots.

Posted By Mike, Des Moines, IA : November 24, 2008 9:14 am

I was at a weekend-long swim meet this weekend in Indianapolis, and every other person in the bleachers had an iPhone. iPhones were gaming, shopping, direction finding, voice recording, and picture taking. A very popular little device.

All this about “hard drive mode” is a bit silly, since you can synchronize the iPhone with your Mac or PC with the included USB cable. That is a one-link transfer. Having any sort of removable media is just an extra interim step that is already handled elegantly over USB.

I do agree that copy and paste would be nice. I found a restaurant address in online, and wanted to cut/paste it into the map app, but could not. Also a higher resolution camera & flash, video camera would have been handy at the meet.

Still, no one at the meet had anything but praise for their iPhones. Apple’s easy interface worked as well for the geeks as for the technophobic. Well done, Apple.

I saw two cool apps at the meet. The new Google voice search is a cool app, and someone at the meet introduced me to “aroundme” a free app that finds nearby restaurants and points of interest.

With people standing in lines and the Verizon stores selling out of the Storm. Which story does CNN run? A story about a useless patch rollout for the iPhone. Sounds like CNN is a little biased.

Posted By BDM Philly, PA : November 24, 2008 6:56 am

copy and paste would be nice, but where is the mms. Whenever I get a MMS from a friend I have to find a computer to look at it. Give me a break.

Posted By Matt, Kendallville, IN : November 23, 2008 11:58 pm

To Jay above, there is no “hard drive mode” for the iPhone. You’d think there would be, but no. Yes, I have an iPhone. It’s a slick but irritating toy.

While it might be selling nicely in the USA, please bear in mind that elsewhere in the world there are MANY more phone choices, because you’re not forced to buy your phones via a carrier. I’m going back to Windows Mobile as soon as the HTC Touch HD gets released in my neck of the woods.

All I want for Xmas on my iPhone3G:

1. text forwarding
2. contact info forwarding
3. cut and paste

;-))

Posted By Luisito, Des Moines, IA : November 22, 2008 9:06 pm

Sheesh, all this whining about copy & paste… Don’t worry, I’m sure it’s on its way once they decide how to control the data “sandboxes” that each app resides in. That would be the biggest target for hackers, so Apple’s not taking it lightly.

The keyboard still rocks (having it change for each use and its ability to change layouts on the fly trumps a physical keyboard, IMO), MMS has always sucked anyway, no need for removable media (how many little memory cards can I lose?), the lack of an internal compass is moot since I’m not going to be sitting in my chair waving the phone around.

The only real-world bummer for me so far has been the lack of voice dialing. Considering that OS X has pretty slick voice recognition built in already, I would expect it to be implemented on the iPhone fairly well. Maybe there’s a bigger picture issue behind keeping it off for now.

There are lots of other phones out there, if you don’t like the iPhone - move on.
Don’t forget Microsoft does not make hardware (phones) - it supplies the software(if that is what you want to call it). So it is not the same as Apple , there is nothing to compare. ……Look at the hardware product Zune…..what a success…………

Posted By seattle washington : November 22, 2008 12:52 am

anyone notice that incoming text messages from the locked screen now show the user who texted you and underneath it says “text message”, where before it used to just say “text message” not sure if this is a feature

Posted By Mark San francisco CA : November 22, 2008 12:07 am

Regarding: Niko, Liberty City

Yeah it doesn’t meet the demands of the majority of people… exactly why it’s the number one selling phone in the USA.. Yeah because nobody cares and nobody want’s it.

Whoop-dee f**ing doo!
Talk about a solution in search of a problem. Jeez.

Cut & paste. Tether.

FAIL.

Still, I would hate to go back to my old phone.

“Until I can get an iPhone with the ability to utilize removable media (i.e. sdhc, mini sdhc) I refuse to buy one. As much as I would like to have one the absence of removable media ability is a deal killer, regardless of what else it does. I haven’t looked at all of the Windows based smart phones but those I have looked at do have removable media capability. Wake up Apple.”

Bill, this makes no sense…the whole phone is removable media, who needs a memory card slot…just plug it in to a computer and use it in hard drive mode.

Posted By Jay, Bay Area, CA : November 21, 2008 7:12 pm

What’s laughable is that most on this board don’t realize the iPhone is an email client and pictures are available via email. Don’t most cell providers charge for MMS? Tell your friends to get a better phone!

Posted By Jack, Houston, TX : November 21, 2008 6:50 pm

We need COPY AND PASTE, Steve!

Why crawl if you can run?

Is that hard to do?
It’s very time consuming rewriting info we find into another app.

I hope someone can hear me.

Thanks.

I think the updates were well-timed, and I do agree that there are more updates to be had… however, people have to realize that it’s all business risk and releasing updates is not as simple, and with such a popular product such as this where millions are out in the field, I’m pretty sure it takes an army of engineers to create, test and release updates that won’t irritate MILLIONS of users. Good Job. Hey, at least they haven’t released an update to fix a previous update. That’s a big no-no… much like a recall in the pharmaceutical business.

They do offer cut and pasting. Not supported in all apps though. CYDIA app

New iPhone request: Apple should make an iPhone with a nice physical keypad, nice and tangible.

i think the iphone blackberry storm will be very interesting and i am still very curious sbout the storm application software…which i think will be mostly business oriented and therefore storm is not so much on the “iphone killer” league.

More useless “updates”

Regardless if the Storm is a great device or not it will still sell well. As with the iPhone OS updates can be rolled out to correct and ADD functionality.

Apple fans needs to get over themselves and Fortune needs to stop the daily Apple article to keep the brand relevant.

The market is larger then one company and iPhone does NOT meet the needs of a large portion of people.

Posted By Niko, Liberty City, VC : November 21, 2008 1:35 pm

“This update is laughable. Only two of the changes are actually worth anything ”

You mean you didn’t get what you paid for in this update? Whine much?

“Sounds like they’re staying awake nights at Apple wondering how much damage the ‘Storm” will create”

Yeah, sure they are :p We must be reading different reviews of the “Storm”. Looking forward to all the long lines of people in front of Verizon stores today :p

Posted By AAPLWatch, SF CA : November 21, 2008 12:35 pm

All these improvements at midnight just before the debut of the ‘Storm”!
Sounds like they’re staying awake nights at Apple wondering how much damage the ‘Storm” will create.

And yet, despite all that people claim to want, no phone is selling better than the iPhone. So while there may be things people want, they clearly haven’t been a deterrent to sales, which is ultimately what matters most. The entire RIM line features copy and paste, and yet that line was handled easily by the iPhone last quarter, despite a significantly higher ASP.

As far as the “toy” comment, I’d rather sell millionis of “toys” then have my “better phone” sit on the shelf.

Posted By Will, Placentia, CA : November 21, 2008 11:25 am

Horizontal typing is available in a free App in the store, Firemail, I think.

Posted By brad, Honolulu Hawaii : November 21, 2008 11:17 am

This update is laughable. Only two of the changes are actually worth anything (dropped calls and safari stability).

Still missing:
Copy and Paste
Voice dialing (Say Who is OK but you still have to interact with the phone instead of just hitting a button on your earpiece and saying “call so and so”)
MMS
Stereo Bluetooth support

It’s too bad that according to Steve Jobs and Apple I don’t want those 4 things though because secrectly I really DO want those 4 items as do many other people.

Oh and the option to have Flash if I so desire would be nice as well.

Posted By Jacen, Merrifield, VA : November 21, 2008 11:16 am

Exactly, now horizontal screen for typing emails (that would allow the keys to be larger!) as is now key board sucks, thanks for the auto word turn off(what a pain that was……but the changes they have announced are no big deal. The RIMM phone just may be a better phone, morre appropriate for the business person, while the iPhone is more of a toy for everyone.

Posted By rick, brentwood, ca : November 21, 2008 10:34 am

I’m not surprised. Apple always gives you want they tell you you want and instead of of what you actually ask for.

Posted By Walwus, Jacksonville, FL : November 21, 2008 10:25 am

Also surprised they still don’t have horizontal keyboard option for typing e-mail and text.

Posted By Frank, Dallas, Texas : November 21, 2008 10:02 am

Even I (Apple fanboy, but not iPhone owner yet:-) am surprised they still don’t have cut-and-paste between apps…
