Apple was 5th busiest retail site on Cyber Monday
Apple.com was the exception in comScore’s report on retail sales for Cyber Monday 2008, the biggest online shopping day in a year marked by global financial meltdown.
While its competitors were offering deep discounts to pull in recession-battered customers, Apple (AAPL) had already ended its Black Friday sale and by Monday was back to charging its usual premium prices for laptops, desktops and MP3 players.
Yet its online store still managed to grab the No. 5 spot in comScore’s ranking of the top 20 most visited retail sites on Monday Dec. 1, handily beating not only Dell (DELL) and Hewlett Packard (HPQ), but such full-fledged retail outlets as Best Buy (BBY), Toys “R” Us and Circuit City (CC).
Apple.com drew nearly 3.7 million visitors that day, up 43% from November’s somewhat depressed average. The big winner for Cyber Monday was eBay (EBAY), with nearly 13 million visitors, followed by Amazon (AMZN; 9.2 million), Wal-Mart (WMT; 6.7 million) and Target (TGT; 4.8 million).
Overall, according to comScore, online spending was up 15% from 2007, driven by a 22% increase in the number of buyers. But those buyers made 9% fewer purchases than last year, and they spent 5% less.
Below the fold: comScore’s top 20 chart, its breakdown of e-commerce spending and, perhaps most usefully for tight-fisted shoppers, its ranking of the top 10 comparison shopping sites, in which Shopzilla.com was the big winner.

Considering Apple barely sharpened its pencils on Black Friday and given the looming recession, #5 is nothing short of extraordinary.
I wonder how many of those Ebay and Amazon CyberMonday sales were Apple products?
“Busiest” in number of visitors, but that’s only a third of the story. Sales are what counts. I visited the Apple web store only to be turned off by its low discounts (though, this is coming from someone who’s always advocated “Buy Apple Stock, not Apple Products” for himself)
Ebay great job you have something for everybody in every price range. Apple not impressed never have been.
This is so misleading. It might be true, according to comScore that Apple Inc. as a WHOLE made to the top 5 but it went too far to claim that its “online store still managed to grab #5″. If you learn a little more about how comScore collects and report the data, you’ll understand Apple Inc. includes all of its properties, itunes, iphones, TV etc. and apple store is only a small protion of its total traffic.
Understand how you all love Apple so much…but truth is truth and it shouldn’t be manipulated just because you love it.
I’m just sittin’ here readin’ this and smilin’ >8^)
The comments made thus far really do highlight the ignorance (or plain stupidity if I were allowed by anti-PC ways) of the general populace.
Apple is article head line because, like one commentator (who some intelligence) has already pointed out, Apple is in the top 5 irrespective of any discount deals.
Broadly speaking, this may be a testament to Apple’s success as a brand; the fact that consumers are in denial about the recession; or that the recession may not be as deep as forecasters predict.
Either way, this is probably a good sign. For Apple, for consumers and more the economy.
By the way, Phil is no fanboi.
When the revolution comes, he will be one of the first up against the wall.
Sorry Phil. You’re an OK guy. But you know how it is.
I come to this Apple blog in order to read about Apple. Because I am a sad fanboi.
I do not come to an Apple blog in order to get upset that the author of that blog is writing stuff about Apple.
I leave that to others.
For all of you that are wondering why this is about Apple. Look at the title of this blog: Apple 2.0… not Ebay, not Amazon… Apple 2.0
I agree, another attempt to pump AAPL as usual while the other stocks are being ignored.
eBay #1 on cyber monday, ignored.
Amazon #2, ignored.
And Apple #5! deserves a frontpage?
Pure Apple fanboi post.
ex ped: fanboi, mois?
It is because Apple unlike the other sites on that top five list is not a deep discounts type of store, so you would think that during hard economical times they would not be anywhere near a list that features the most visits from shoppers.
It goes to show that many people may still be in denial about the recessionary economy. Or they are still trying to stretch their money beyond their means to give gifts like expensive mp3 players.
That is where the bias comes from, if you look on this list, the other 4 stores cater to bargain hunting shoppers.
And http://www.newgenerationgas.com, a site dedicated to educate the public on energy facts was the 30,453rd most active site on the planet. Now that’s news!
Just curious- why title the article “Apple was the 5th busiest retail site…”? Why not “Ebay was the busiest…” or “WalMart was the third busiest” or “Best Buy had the largest increase”? Why bias every single story towards Apple even when there’s no good reason to do so?
P.S. I do love Mac; I just think your title was dumb.
ex ped: Only because this is a blog about Apple. If the site were called eBay 2.0, the story would have been written with a different slant and might have carried a headline like the one you suggest.
But I take your point. It’s like that fake Boston Globe headline from the 1960s: “BOSTON MAN DIES IN NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST”
The proper stock symbol for Target Corp. is (TGT). (TARG) is Targanta Therapeutics. That is all
ex ped: Thanks. Fixed.
